Terminal (TUI)

The pa terminal application runs Posit Assistant in your terminal — interactive or headless for scripting and automation.

📝 Development builds

These downloads are development builds, rebuilt every time a change is merged. They can include features that are not in a release yet; those features are described in the unreleased docs.

Quick Install

On macOS or Linux:

curl -fsSL https://assistant.posit.co/builds/install-tui.sh | bash

On Windows, run in PowerShell:

irm https://assistant.posit.co/builds/install-tui.ps1 | iex

The scripts detect your OS and architecture, download the appropriate binary, and install it. Customize the install location with the INSTALL_DIR environment variable. By default, the Windows installer does not modify PATH; it reports the installed binary location and, if needed, the directory to add to your user PATH. To add it to your user PATH automatically:

$env:ADD_TO_PATH = "1"; irm https://assistant.posit.co/builds/install-tui.ps1 | iex

Once the install directory is on PATH, run:

pa

Manual Downloads

Download the binary for your platform and extract it:

PlatformArchitectureDownload
macOSARM64 (Apple Silicon)pa-macos-arm64.gz
Linuxx64pa-linux-x64.gz
LinuxARM64pa-linux-arm64.gz
Windowsx64pa-windows-x64.zip

On macOS or Linux, install manually with:

gunzip pa-*.gz
chmod +x pa-*
sudo mv pa-* /usr/local/bin/pa

On Windows, extract pa-windows-x64.zip and place pa.exe in a directory on your PATH.

Model Provider

The TUI uses Posit AI Pass as its default provider. Run pa and follow the sign-in prompt to authenticate with your Posit AI Pass account.

To use a different provider, see the Providers page for the full list and setup instructions. Configure credentials in the config file (~/.posit/assistant/settings.json) or via environment variables.

For Databricks, the TUI supports service-principal OAuth and personal access tokens. Browser OAuth is disabled because a terminal session cannot guarantee that the browser can reach its local callback. See Databricks for setup.

Further Configuration

See TUI Usage for interactive mode flags, headless mode, image rendering, and other terminal-specific options.
